Introduction to Roulette

Roulette is an incredibly popular game to play at online casinos in NZ. It’s been around for an extremely long time – the land-based variant harks back to the 17th century and the word itself is a French one, meaning “little wheel”. The game includes players and a croupier, who spins the wheel – the ball can land in one of 37 or 38 slots, depending on which version of roulette you are playing. These slots are numbered: black and red are located sequentially on the numbers from 1 to 36, while the 0 or 00 is green. As the player, you will have to place your bets on colours and ranges, odds and evens, combinations of numbers, and of course, single numbers. As for its online variant, it has only served to broaden the appeal of the game.

About Online Roulette

When you’re playing roulette at your favourite mobile casino in New Zealand, you can enjoy it from the comfort of your home, or from anywhere else for that matter if you have a laptop, tablet or smartphone. The addition of online roulette among the selection of online casino games also means that players from NZ and all over the world can enjoy various types of roulette, including European Roulette, French Roulette, and American Roulette.

As with most online casino games, online roulette uses random number generator technology to help spin the wheel and ensure the random landing of the ball. In the variant played at land-based casinos, the ball normally gets bumped around by obstructions and hooks before it lands. While this delivers a certain thrill, something which is missing from the online version, there is no doubt that online roulette is still an exciting and involving game. Plus, it’s totally fair.

European Roulette vs American Roulette

Over the years, two prevalent versions of roulette have emerged – the result of divergent betting preferences.

Let’s start with American Roulette. This comes with a roulette wheel that contains 38 numbers, which include 1 to 36 with the last two numbers comprising the 0 and the 00. The 00 is an extra component of American Roulette, but its purpose seems to be in giving the house more of an edge.

European Roulette (and French Roulette) on the other hand has 37 numbers, which includes 1 to 36 and the 0.

In other words, it doesn’t have a 00. However, there is an equal amount of odd and even numbers, red and black numbers, and low and high numbers. If the ball lands in the green slot (0), the player will lose to the house. That is why the additional 00 in the American version ensures that the house has the advantage, as there is an added chance for you to lose. It’s also why European Roulette has proven to be the more popular of the two.

Playing Online Roulette

While we recommend you play European Roulette over American, you should always remember that roulette is a game of chance. Yes, it will help to choose certain versions and game titles over the other, and to learn the rules while applying basic strategies, but in the end, it all comes down to good ol’ Lady Luck.

We do recommend you find a reputable online casino to play at of which there are plenty in NZ. These should be licensed and approved for fair gameplay, responsible conduct, and swift payouts. Plus, it should deliver to players generous bonuses, promos and loyalty rewards, as well as reputable payment options, 24/7 customer support, and of course, fantastic games. Some of the top casinos also offer Live Casino or Live Dealer options, which allow you to stream actual high definition roulette games onto your PC – here, instead of the software spinning the wheel, an actual croupier does the deed, much like in a land-based casino, adding to the excitement of the game in the process.
